With the loss of the Honda engine, McLaren found it difficult to find a suitable supplier for the 1993 season. The hypothesis of the Renault V10 engines was discarded due to conflicts between sponsors (Shell for McLaren, Elf for Renault) and in the end Ron Dennis's team had to fall back on Ford HB customers. This situation created friction with Ayrton Senna, who nevertheless put in a lot of his own, obtaining some memorable victories like the one at Donington under the water. Senna was second in a Prost-dominated championship in a much superior Williams-Renault. McLaren’s second driver was Michael Andretti, who finished third at the Italian GP, before being replaced by Hakkinen, who was quick right from the start, finishing third in Japan in his second McLaren GP. McLaren finished second in the constructors' championship behind Williams.
